Volunteer Programme

Do you have a heartfelt calling to help make this world a better place? You may do so by enriching the lives of vulnerable children in the Impilo Foster Homes for AIDS Orphans of South Africa by volunteering your time and passion to assist in caring for these special children, you will have the opportunity for a life changing experience and be blessed in many ways

Volunteer Requirments

Attributes:

Working with vulnerable children requires a certain physical, emotional and mental strength, and therefore the following attributes are imperative:

  • christian faith
  • Speak and understand english
  • 18+ years old
  • Physically healthy and fit
  • Emotionally and psychologically resilient
  • A love and passion for children
  • Responsible
  • Patient
  • Adaptable
  • Trustworthy and honest
  • Self-sacrificing
  • Open to learn
  • Able to work well in a team
  • Self-motivated with a positive outlook on life
  • Willing to work long hours if necessary
  • Willing to share ideas and innovative suggestions
  • Non-smoker
  • Undergo orientation programme
  • Abide by the house rules / village rules

Duration and Duties:

  • Volunteers must be prepared to stay a minimum of 3 months, longer periods are welcome
  • Volunteers work or assist in I.A. The foster home, school, clinic etc. As required) 6 days a week from the time children awake (approx. 6 am) to the time they go to bed (approx. 7.30 pm during the week and later during the weekends
  • Duties include but are not limited to assisting the children to get ready for school, pack lunch boxes, attend extra mural activities, assist with preparing breakfast, lunch, dinner, bathtime routine, assist with school homework, engage in playtime fun and games, telling bedtime stories and attending church with them

Accommodation:

  • We have a volunteer room with ensuite toilet / shower facilities.
  • Bedding and food are supplied however you will need to bring your own towel and toilettries. We will take care of your laundry
  • We do not provide accommodation for unmarried couples
  • Indulgence in alcohol and illegal substances is strictly forbidden and will not be tolerated.
  • We ask that you respect our values and principles during your stay at impilo.

Administration:

  • Application form to be completed
  • Testimonial form to be completed by three people unrelated to you
  • Indemnity form to be completed
  • Police clearance certificate (according to south african law this is only valid for 6 months so needs to be the last document applied for
  • Certified copy of your passport
  • Certified copy of your medical insurance
  • Proof of required vaccinations (hep A, hep B and TB are mandatory)
  • If you are staying longer than 90 days, you may require a visa. Please check with the south african embassy nearest to you. A letter of invitation will be sent to take with when applying for your visa

Expenses:

You are liable for your own costs in getting to south africa, which include:

  • Flights and airport taxes
  • Vaccinations
  • Police clearance certificate
  • Passport
  • Visa
  • Medical and travel insurance
  • Phonecalls. Check your phone has international roaming. You can buy a sim card in south africa

Your own spending money depends on what you wish to do with your spare time, such as

  • Movies
  • Meals in restaurants
  • Shopping
  • Gifts
  • Tourist attractions
